In 1994, after the original Shulpaneshwar temple was submerged in the Narmada dam, the Gujarat government built a new Shulpaneshwar Mahadev temple near Gora. Devotees come from Maharashtra, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh
The old ancient Shulpaneshwar Mahadev Temple was submerged in Sardar Sarovar in 1994 due to the rising height of the Narmada Dam. The Gujarat Government has built a new temple near the old one. Though a new temple has been built, the faith and belief of the devotees has not diminished. Shulpaneshwar Mahadev's fame is not only in Gujarat but also in the neighboring states of Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, devotees also come here from these states. This is the biggest reason why this place has been chosen for Narmada Maharati.
Devotees from Gujarat and outside Gujarat visit the Shulpaneshwar Mahadev Temple after taking a holy bath in the river Narmada and bow their heads with the Jai Jaikar of "Jai Shulpaneshwar Nath" and feel the blessings of Mahadev by anointing him with bills, milk and sesame. Shulpaneshwar Tirtha is mentioned in Puranas and Mahabharata
Shulpaneshwar Tirtha is mentioned in Puranas, which proves the antiquity of this Tirtha. Chapters 44 to 49 of the Skandhapurana and chapters 104 of the Shiva Purana state that Lord Shiva killed the Andhakasur demon and after his slaying, Lord Shiva's trident was stained with his blood and the blood stains on him could not be removed. Mahadev came here wandering around and the water was flowing in the ground hitting the trident and his trident was clean.
The Shulpaneshwar Tirtha is also mentioned in the Mahabharata. This ancient temple was built by the Pandavas during their exile, which is now submerged in the river.
Despite many attempts, the ancient Shivling could not be removed
It is said that when the ancient temple of Shulpaneshwar Mahadev was about to be submerged in the Narmada Dam, great efforts were made to remove the Shivling inside the temple. As the excavations were being carried out to get the Shivling out, MM went into the ground. So that even now the ancient Shivling is housed in the sunken temple and the new Shivling was established with great fanfare at the present temple.
